Master of Arts in Professional Creative Writing

This program empowers aspiring writers to develop professional creative work and participate thoughtfully in literary and cultural conversations. Students are expected to read widely and with careful attention as they work to master the craft and conventions of their chosen genres by participating in writing workshops and the study of literary masterworks. Alongside creative development, the curriculum encourages a clear understanding of the literary marketplace, pathways to publication, and effective professional practice. Students cultivate their identities as writers, learn to shape their work for intended audiences, and cultivate connections with communities of working writers.

This program prepares students to:

  • Create original creative writing that demonstrates control of elements—including imagery, cadence, characterization, dialogue, and plot—appropriate to genre, intended audience, and medium.
  • Apply knowledge of literary traditions to make informed creative choices across one or more genres, including hybrid and experimental forms.
  • Evaluate their own and others' writing to encourage effective revision.
  •  Explore professional writing practices that support the development of a creative identity and ethical strategies for promoting that identity to readers.
  • Conduct research to support creative growth, professional development, and informed decision-making related to publication and promotion of one’s work.

Graduate Certificate in Professional Creative Writing with Concentration in Literary Genres in Book Publishing

This graduate certificate concentrates on fiction and nonfiction—the core genres driving the U.S. publishing industry, valued at over $20 billion. Designed for aspiring publishing professionals, this program combines two unique experiences at the University of Denver (DU) to equip students with comprehensive industry knowledge and skills.

First, students complete the Denver Publishing Institute’s (DPI) four-week graduate-level coursework dedicated to helping book lovers launch their publishing careers anywhere in the country. Students are introduced to the process of book publishing—from editing, marketing, and production to the bigger picture of publishing in a constantly changing world. Students engage with leading figures across the publishing spectrum, including small independent trade houses and large global media companies. Students gain a market-focused understanding of publishing and learn to navigate potential internal biases in editorial, marketing, or sales roles.

Second, through DU's College of Professional Studies students explore the Professional Creative Writing (PWRI) program's graduate-level coursework. This component enriches students' understanding of literary genres by examining compelling works through a creative writing lens and enhancing the skills needed to excel in the publishing field of their choice.

This degree prepares students to:

  • Analyze how ideas of literary genres shape the way creative works are presented in the marketplace.
  • Apply knowledge of genre conventions and how they may be combined or violated to publishing-related practices, including manuscript development, editorial assessment, and positioning texts within literary markets.
